When we as Black Mothers come together to be a voice and an advocate, there is power. That power has allowed us the opportunity to change oppressive systems within our schools to create more safe and supportive learning environments for our Black children. We are well on our way toward dismantling the school to prison.
The Black Mothers Forum's micro-schools serve a total of 42 K-8 students in the Tempe and South Phoenix areas. Classes are small — student-teacher ratios are 5:1 — and are mixed-age, so younger children have role models and big kids can mentor.
